There’s a special kind of frustration in this one. You plug your laptop into a perfectly good power source. Then a yellow warning triangle pops up anyway, along with a “Slow charger” message on your taskbar. Normally, that warning is doing its job. It’s telling you that whatever you plugged into isn’t pushing enough wattage. Your battery might keep draining even while you’re technically charging.
But what happens when you know that’s not what’s going on? Say you’ve tried your regular wall adapter. Then you swap in something completely different, like a solar charger or a backup power bank. The warning still shows up. Or maybe you’ve cycled through two or three USB-C cables. All of them rated for high wattage. Nothing changes.
At that point, you’re almost certainly not dealing with a weak charger. You’re dealing with a driver that’s gotten stuck. The fix is one of the simpler tricks in the Windows troubleshooting toolkit. Usually, it’s done and dusted in under two minutes once you know where to click.
Why Windows Throws This Warning in the First Place

Every time you plug in a USB-C charger, something happens behind the scenes. The cable, the charger, and the laptop have a quick back-and-forth. You never actually see it happen. They’re briefly negotiating how much power can safely flow between them. This is the USB-C Power Delivery handshake. When it goes smoothly, your laptop draws exactly what it needs. It pulls up to whatever the charger can supply.
When that handshake genuinely comes up short, the warning is doing its job correctly. Plug a 15-watt charger into a laptop that needs 65 watts. Windows is right to flag that. Your battery might hold steady at best. Or it might keep slipping while you’re running anything demanding.
The trouble starts with the driver that manages all of this. It’s called the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface driver, or ACPI for short. Sometimes it gets stuck on an old reading. It latches onto a phantom low-voltage signal and won’t let go. That happens even after you’ve connected something far more capable. Windows then throttles your charging speed to protect the system. It thinks the power source is weak, even when it isn’t. You could plug into a completely healthy 100-watt brick. Windows would still tell you that you’re being shortchanged.
This kind of glitch tends to show up after a Windows update. A recent driver update can trigger it too. So can a laptop that’s been asleep for days instead of fully shut down. You might also notice the wattage shown in Windows Settings looks unusually low. Nothing about your actual charger has changed. None of that means anything is broken. It just means the driver needs a nudge.
How to Tell If It’s Really a Software Glitch
Before touching any drivers, rule out an actual hardware problem first. Uninstalling a driver won’t help a fried port or a damaged cable. Thankfully, this part only takes a few minutes.
Start by testing more than one power source. If your everyday wall adapter throws the warning, that’s one data point. Try a completely different charger too, like a solar panel setup. If it throws the same warning, one bad charger isn’t the problem. From there, try swapping cables. Test a couple of verified, high-wattage USB-C cables rated for 100 watts. If the message keeps showing up regardless, the cable isn’t your issue either. Last, take a quick look at the charging port itself. Check visually for dust, lint, or a bent pin. That will tell you whether the physical connection is actually compromised.
If you’ve checked all three and everything still looks fine, stop suspecting your hardware. The power is getting where it needs to go. It’s the software that’s misreading it.
Resetting the ACPI Battery Driver
Resetting this driver sounds technical. You might assume you need a repair shop for this. You don’t. You’re really just forcing Windows to forget what it thinks it knows. Then it starts fresh.
Start by unplugging the laptop completely. That includes a wall charger, a solar setup, or a docking station. Then right-click the Start button. Or press the Windows key and X together. Either way, open Device Manager. Once that window is up, look for the category labeled Batteries. Click the small arrow to expand it.
You’ll see a short list of entries underneath. The one you’re after is called Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery. Right-click it and choose Uninstall device. Confirm when Windows asks if you’re sure. That confirmation prompt makes people nervous the first time. It feels like you’re about to break something. There’s no need to worry. You’re not touching your files or your settings. You’re not touching your actual physical battery either. You’re just clearing the software layer that’s been misreading it.
Once that entry disappears from the list, restart your laptop. During the reboot, Windows automatically scans for connected hardware. It notices the battery no longer has a driver assigned to it. Then it installs a brand new one from scratch. That fresh driver is free of whatever bad reading caused the problem in the first place.
On some laptops, you might see more than one entry under Batteries. That’s especially true if the manufacturer bundles its own battery software. If that’s the case, leave anything alone that isn’t the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery. And if that specific entry isn’t there at all, don’t worry. Just restart the laptop anyway. Sometimes rebooting alone is enough to clear whatever temporary state Windows was stuck in.
If the warning still won’t budge, check Windows Update next. There’s sometimes a pending driver or firmware update sitting in the queue. Installing it manually can finish the job the ACPI reset started. It’s also worth glancing back at Device Manager. Look for any other driver flagged with a warning icon. A related driver, not just the battery one, can sometimes be the real cause.

Keeping It From Happening Again
Most people who run into this only see it once. It usually follows a Windows update or a long stretch without restarting. There’s no need to treat it as an ongoing issue. Still, keeping your BIOS and chipset drivers current helps. It makes this kind of miscommunication between hardware and software less likely to begin with. Check your laptop manufacturer’s support page every so often for firmware updates. That matters most if you regularly switch power sources. Maybe it’s a wall charger at your desk during the week. And a solar panel or power bank when you’re traveling.
If the warning keeps coming back after a reset, pay attention to the pattern. A driver reset clears up the vast majority of cases. But a recurring issue on the same machine can point to something else. That’s worth flagging to your manufacturer’s support team.
Confirming the Fix Worked
Once you’re back in Windows, plug your usual charger in. Check the battery icon in your system tray. The yellow triangle should be gone. The “Slow charger” message shouldn’t pop up anymore. Your laptop should go right back to pulling full power the way it’s meant to. That means no more watching your battery drop while you’re plugged in and working.
It’s a small fix for a warning that looks far scarier than it is. Now you know exactly what’s going on the next time that yellow triangle shows up.
